SHIPPAX GUIDEUpfront SHIPPAXGUIDE21/22 · 3 To this date I continue remembering the very first time I held a Shippax publication in my hands: It was back in June 1995, onboard the DFDS vessel HAMBURG when I - at the time a 16 years old student - accompanied my father on a Hamburg- Harwich-Hamburg roundtrip. The master had just received a copy of the GUIDE 95 presenting the new CROWN OF SCANDINAVIA and showed it to me during a bridge visit. I was equally impressed by the book and the ship - and decided to invest my pocket money to order an own copy. What resulted was the first contact with our late founder Klas Brogren, and the start of a closer-growing liaison with Shippax. 27 years on I have the privilege to write the upfront to another issue of GUIDE myself for the first time - a GUIDE which, again, features a DFDS vessel, in fact the company's first newbuilding since four decades (the CROWN of 1994 arrived virtually as a new ship, but she had originally been contracted - and built for - Euroway). The AURA SEAWAYS and her sister LUNA SEAWAYS are setting standards - in terms of their sheer size, in terms of their capacity, in terms of their efficiency (and thus sustainability), and, last but certainly not least, in terms of their onboard service. A Danish witticism translates DFDS as "The Finest Danish Ships", and AURA SEAWAYS as well as LUNA SEAWAYS certainly live up to that standard. The twins illustrate that a ro-pax vessel can offer service, food and an 'onboard atmosphere' that lives up to cruise ship level. GUIDE 21/22 presents the AURA SEAWAYS as the series' prototype, looking at her technology and onboard facilities, her route and as well the ports she serves. Curiously though, while AURA SEAWAYS and LUNA SEAWAYS are innovative ships, they at the same time herald the end of an era - the era of vessels burning fossil fuel. Widely the twins are considered to be - and remain - the last 'conventional' DFDS ro- pax vessels. Speaking personally and realising the im- mense challenges brought about by alternative fuels and alternative propulsion, I am a little bit in doubt if the 'post-fossil' era will in fact arrive as quickly in the ro-pax sector as many politicians (and also many of us in the industry) hope. But DFDS is certainly dedicated to turn this vision into reality as soon as possible, and although some time may pass until the first fossil-free ro-pax enters into operation, DFDS can justifiably be called a 'climate neutrality pioneer' of our industry already at this stage. The company has defined its objective - climate neutrality by 2050 - as well an action plan leading there. GUIDE will tell more about this as well, combined with the promise to DFDS that we will for sure make their EUROPA SEAWAYS another theme vessel once this fascinating vision has turned into reality! I would like to take the opportunity to thank DFDS, our correspondents and our advertisers for their continuous support which has been essential to make this publication possible. May this GUIDE again find the interest of you, our readers - and may it help to exchange impressions and experiences within our industry! After all, we will manage the great 'sustainability challenge' only together. For this, the 'young generation' of our industry will be crucial. Having said that, I would be particularly pleased if this issue of GUIDE maybe falls into the hands of someone with a fascination for the ferry industry who is only at the start of his/her career (or even before that) - just as it happened to me back in June 1995, 27 years ago.
