SHIPPAX DESIGNS 2 · SHIPPAXDESIGNS21/22 www.shippax.comSHIPPAXDESIGNS21/22 · 3 Upfront PHOTO : GEORGE GIANNAKIS www.shippax.com Back in 2013 we dedicated our Shippax GUIDE to the VIKING GRACE as the world's first long-distance Ro-Pax vessel using LNG. Ten years on, we are back onboard a stunning Viking Line vessel with this issue of DESIGNS, now featuring the VIKING GLORY. While she certainly benefits from the experiences gained with VIKING GRACE, she is neither her 'half-sister' nor just an advancement of her basic design or concept- she is simply a completely different and new ship, full of innovations and designed with passion to detail. And she certainly is a ship worth looking at! Accordingly, we are taking you onboard and through her vast variety of public spaces, technology, and thoughts behind VIKING GLORY's design, followed by an interview with Jan Hanses, President & CEO of Viking Line Abp, who gives us an insight of Viking Line, its current status, and its vision for the future. While DESIGNS and GUIDE are obviously B2B publications dedicated to current shipbuilding, ship operation and marketing trends and developments, we feel that we should not completely omit to look - at least on occasions - back into the history of the portrayed shipping companies as well. In line with that idea, we have included a portrait of the AURELLA, Viking Line's first 'Jumbo Jet of the Seas' inaugurated exactly 50 years ago, in 1973. When we asked Jan Hanses what the AURELLA means for Viking Line in retro- spect, he said that "she was the start of the design evolution, which last year culminated in the launch of the VIKING GLORY". A good reason to look at her - and to re-view her interior design in the perfect fashion of the 1970s! On a personal note, I must admit that writing the feature about AURELLA was a particular joy for me, as I cannot make any secret of the fact that she belongs to my very favourite ferries. I will never forget the day I was onboard first, back in spring 2000 at Drapetsona in Greece, as she was just being prepared for a new (short-lived) spell in traffic to Majorca Island as the VILLE DE SETE… In a way, that visit was love at first glance! While being a highly professional business on the one hand, (ferry) shipping certainly retains a personal, familiar, even emotional element on the other hand - occasionally with a touch of nostalgia. We are excited to see what future generations are going to write about the VIKING GLORY in 40 or 50 years… As usual, compiling our latest issue of DESIGNS has been a big team effort. We would like to thank everybody who has supported us in all and every aspect. Please enjoy reading this latest edition of DESIGNS - We are sure you will be just as impressed by the VIKING GLORY as we at Shippax have been!
